Navy likely to waive right to indemnity against base opponents

The Navy is likely to forgo its right to indemnity against Gangjeong residents who opposed and delayed the construction of its base in the village.

During the first mediation session between the two sides on Thursday at Seoul Central District Court, the national government made an official announcement that it would not seek compensation.

There remain some sticking points to an agreement. The court therefore decided to compel some changes by both sides to reach a resolution.

The government has been seeking 3.4 billion won from Gangjeong residents for the base construction delays.

정부 "강정주민 구상금 청구소송 철회"

해군의 서귀포시 강정마을 주민들을 상대로 청구한 구상권이 철회될 가능성이 높아지고 있습니다.

오늘 오후 서울중앙지방법원 제14민사부 주재로 열린 정부와 강정주민간 구상금 청구소송에 따른 첫 조정에서 정부측은 구상권 소송을 철회하겠다는 뜻을 전한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

다만 일부 현안에 대해 양측의 입장차가 좁혀지지 않아 조정은 성립되지 않았고 결국 재판부가 별도의 강제 조정안을 만들기로 했습니다.

정부는 강정마을 주민들에게 해군기지 공사지연에 따른 손해배상으로 34억원 상당의 구상금 청구소송을 제기해 놓고 있습니다.
