Only 33% of islanders ‘know about April Third Incident’

According to new research, most island residents know little to nothing about the April Third Incident.

A provincial council special committee commissioned a survey of 809 islanders. Only 33.2 percent responded that they knew about the incident, which many historians argue is the defining issue in modern Jeju history.

76.4 percent of respondents had never taken part in a memorial ceremony or other event related to the incident, and 65.5 percent said they had never read a book about it.

The committee stressed the need to raise public awareness about the incident and boost public participation in events related to it.

A firm called Research Plus conducted the study from October 25th to November 13th. It was done in the form of one-on-one interviews with a structured questionnaire.

제주도의회 4.3특별위원회가 제주도민 809명을 대상으로 조사한 결과 제주4.3을 알고 있다는 응답은 33.2%에 그쳤습니다.

위령제 등 4.3관련 행사에 참여한 적이 없다는 응답은 76.4%, 관련 서적을 읽어본 적이 없다는 응답도 65.5%에 달했습니다.

4.3특별위원회는 도민의 4.3에 대한 인식을 높이고 참여를 유도할 수 있는 방안이 모색돼야 한다고 강조했습니다.

이번 조사는 리서치플러스에 의뢰해 지난달 25일부터 이달 13일까지 정형화된 설문지를 이용한 일대일 개별방문 면접 방식으로 진행됐습니다.
