Jeju loses designation as ‘clean’ area it had maintained for 14 years

Jeju has lost its 14-year designation as a bovine tuberculosis-free region.

The provincial government says 47 cattle have contracted the disease, which is classified as a class II livestock infectious disease.

That exceeds 35, which is 0.1 percent of the total number of cattle on the island.

That’s the standard for designation as a clean area set by the World Organisation for Animal Health.

Jeju maintains only two other “clean” designations. It is free of bovine brucellosis and a swine disease called pseudorabies.

제주서 '소 결핵병' 확산…청정지역 상실

제주에서 가축전염병인 소 결핵병이 확산되며 14년째 유지하던 청정지역 지위를 상실했습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면, 올 들어 제주에서 소 47마리가 제2종 법정가축전염병인 소 결핵병에 감염됐습니다.

이 같은 수치는 도내 전체 사육두수 0.1%인 35마리를 넘는 것입니다.

특히 국제수역사무국 OIE가 설정한 청정지역 인증 기준이 초과돼 제주는 2003년 이후 처음으로 청정지역 지위를 잃게 됐습니다.

제주가 돼지열병에 이어 소 결핵병 청정지역 지위까지 잃게 되면서 청정지역 지위를 인정받는 가축전염병은 소 브루셀라와 돼지 오제스키병 2개만 남았습니다.
