President Moon Jae-in may issue a special pardon for Gangjeong residents who were punished for their activities in opposition to the construction of a Navy base in their village.

A high official at the Blue House said the president would issue the first special pardons of his administration at the beginning of next year, rather than at the end of this year.

The Ministry of Justice is reviewing the possible candidates by determining for which national affairs to issue pardons. In addition to the navy base critics, officials are also considering pardons for opponents to the deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system.

강정주민 특별사면 검토…시기는 내년 초쯤

제주해군기지 건설 반대집회에 참여했다가 처벌받았던 강정주민에 대한 특별사면이 검토되는 가운데 사면 시기는 내년 초가 될 전망입니다.

청와대 고위 관계자는 문재인 정부 첫 특별사면은 올 연말보다 내년 초쯤 단행될 것으로 전망했습니다.

이에따라 올해 말 성탄절 특사보다는 내년 설 특사가 단행될 가능성이 커지고 있습니다.

한편 법무부는 강정마을 해군기지 반대집회 관련자와 사드 배치 반대집회 관련자 등
일부 시국사건으로 범위를 좁혀 특사 대상자를 검토하는 것으로 알려졌습니다.
