New memorial to forced laborers during Japanese colonial era
Statue at Jeju Harbor unveiled Thursday

A new statue in Jeju commemorates the islanders who were forced to work in Japan, Manchuria, and other locations during the Japanese colonial area.

The committee that spearheaded the project consists of members from 29 labor and civic groups on the island. Committee members unveiled the statue near Jeju Harbor in a Thursday morning ceremony.

135 groups and individuals contributed to the bricks used for the area around the statue and 1,785 people contributed to the accompanying plaque.

일제강점기 당시 일본과 만주 등지로 끌려간 강제동원 노동자들을 기억하고
추모하기 위한 노동자상이 제주에 건립됐습니다.

제주도내 29개 노동·시민단체 등으로 구성된 제주지역일제강제동원 노동자상 건립추진위원회는 오는 오전 제주항 2부두 연안여객터미널 앞에서 노동자상 제막식을 갖고 강제동원 노동자들의 아픔을 기억했습니다.

한편 이번 노동자상 건립을 위한 기억벽돌 모집에 135개 단체와 개인이, 기억동판 모집에는 모두 1천785명이 참여했습니다.
