Civic groups nationwide hail Gangjeong decision
‘Seoul should waive all similar claims across the country’

Civic groups across the nation are hailing the decision by the national government to waive its right to seek compensation for the navy base construction delays.

An association of about 20 organizations announced their support of the decision on Friday. They said it is the first step toward easing the conflicts in Gangjeong. They also called on Seoul to waive all similar government compensation claims nationwide, saying such claims limit the public’s freedom of expression.

강정마을 주민 등을 대상으로 제기됐던 구상권이 철회된 것과 관련해 전국 시민사회단체들이 환영의 뜻을 나타냈습니다.

전국 20여개 시민사회 단체로 구성된 국가손해배상청구대응모임은 오늘 논평을 통해 이번 결정이 강정마을 갈등 해결의 첫걸음이 될 것이라며 표현의 자유를 가로막는 국가 손해배상과 가압류 역시 모두 철회돼야 한다고 주장했습니다.
