Seongsan Sunrise Festival canceled
Authorities worried about spread of highly-pathogenic bird flu

Authorities have canceled this year’s Seongsan Sunrise Festival in the wake of a local outbreak of highly-pathogenic bird flu.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security and the provincial government advised the festival committee to cancel the event, which was set to begin December 30th. After discussions, the committee agreed in the interests of preventing the spread of bird flu.

This is the first festival to fall victim to a livestock epidemic since 2010.

Officials will, however, allow people to climb Seongsan Sunrise Peak January first to make their New Year’s wishes while viewing the first sunrise of 2018 from the top.

고병원성 AI 확산에 따른 여파로 오는 30일 개막할 예정이던 성산일출축제가 전면 취소됐습니다.

성산일출축제위원회는 행정안전부와 제주도의 취소 요청에 따라 개최 여부를 논의한 결과 AI 확산 방지 차원에서 행사를 취소하기로 결정했습니다.

가축전염병으로 행사가 취소된 것은 지난 2010년 구제역 확산 이후 8년 만입니다.

다만 새해 아침에 열리는 일출기원제는 예정대로 진행하기로 했습니다.
