Shipwreck discovered off Hyeopjae coast
Believed to be Japanese ship sunk by American vessel during Pacific War

Authorities have discovered off the coast of Hyeopjae in Hallim-eup a sunken vessel that they believe went down during the Pacific War.

The provincial government found it during a survey of shipwrecks off the island’s coast. The hull of the vessel is 70 meters long and it rests at a depth of ten meters.

According to area residents and historical materials, it is a Japanese ship that was sunk by an American vessel during the war.

The provincial government plans to send more researchers out and consult with experts before seeking designation of the shipwreck as a cultural asset.

협재바다서 태평양 전쟁 침몰 추정 선박 발견

제주시 한림읍 협재 앞바다에 태평양 전쟁 당시 침몰된 것으로 추정되는 선박이 발견됐습니다.

제주도는 최근 협재리 앞바다에서 수중 매장 선박 기초조사 용역을 추진한 결과
수심 10m 지점에서 선체 길이 70m 가량의 철선의 잔해가 많이 발견됐다고 밝혔습니다.

마을 주민들의 증언과 사료에 따르면 과거 태평양전쟁 당시 당시 이 인근에서
일본의 해군군함이 미국 잠수함에 의해 침몰한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

제주도는 앞으로 문화재청의 현지조사와 전문가 심의 등을 거쳐 문화재 지정을 결정한다는 계획입니다.
