Seoul searching for more April Third Incident victims
Victims and their relatives may apply for official recognition next year

The national government will accept applications next year from people who say they or their family members were victims of the April Third Incident and want to be officially recognized as such.

Interior ministry representatives say the cabinet voted for a bill that was designed to shed further light on the incident and restore the honor of its victims.

In order to ensure all victims and their families here in Jeju, and those who may have moved to other parts of the country or globe, are counted, the ministry will accept applications throughout 2018 for victimhood status. They will be accepted at community service centers.

About 14,000 people are officially recognized as victims, and about 59,000 people are listed as victims’ relatives. The government has not added to those lists since 2012.

내년 4·3 희생자·유족 추가 접수

정부가 내년 1년 동안 제주 4·3 사건 희생자와 유족을 추가로 신고 받습니다.

행정안전부에 따르면 '제주 4·3 사건 진상규명과 희생자 명예회복에 관한 특별법 시행령 개정안'이 국무회의에서 의결됐습니다.

행안부는 제주도가 아닌 지역과 해외 희생자 또는 유족들의 신고가 누락되지 않도록
내년 1년 동안 제주도와 행정시, 읍면동주민센터를 통해 추가 신고를 접수합니다.

지금까지 4.3사건 피해자로 인정받은 사람은 희생자 1만 4천여 명, 유족 5만 9천여 명 등 7만 3천여 명에 이르고 있으며 피해 신고는 지난 2012년 이후 중단돼 왔습니다.
