Chinese account for 68% of medical tourists
Officials working to diversify market

An increasing number of non-Koreans, mostly Chinese, are coming to Jeju for medical treatment.

The provincial government says the island welcomed nearly 67-hundred medical tourists from abroad last year. That’s 2,100 more than the previous year.

68 percent were Chinese.

Local officials say that can be a problem. They point to Beijing’s ban earlier this year on group tours to Korea in response to Seoul’s decision to deploy the THAAD anti-missile system. They therefore plan to diversify the medical tourism sector to avoid over-dependence on China.

제주를 찾는 외국인 의료관광객이 늘고 있지만 중국인 의존도가 큰 것으로 나타났습니다.

제주도에 따르면 지난해 제주를 찾은 외국인 환자는 6천660여 명으로 전년보다 2천100여명, 46% 증가했습니다.

이 가운데 중국인은 4천530여 명으로 68%를 차지했습니다.

제주도는 사드 보복이후 중국인 관광객 수가 급감한 것처럼 외국인 환자 유치에도 차질이 예상됨에 따라 해외시장 다변화 전략을 추진하기로 했습니다.
