Record low groundwater levels
2017 was extremely dry in Jeju

The island’s groundwater level is falling to its lowest point on record.

The provincial government surveyed 68 observation wells. The average water level in them was 11.84 meters ? 3.3 meters lower than at the same time last year. The level in the driest well was 11.59 meters.

In the northern region, five of the 21 wells are at least one full stage below normal.

It’s been a dry year for the island - with rainfall only at 70 percent of last year’s total. Areas up on the mountain fared worse. They only got half the rain they did last year.

제주특별자치도가 최근 관측정 68개소의 지하수위를 분석한 결과
평균 수위는 11.84미터로 지난해 같은 기간에 비해 평균 3.3m, 지역에 따라 최고 11.59m까지 떨어진 것으로 나타났습니다.

북부지역은 관측정 21개소 가운데 5데가 기준수위 1단계보다 낮게 형성됐습니다.

올들어 제주 강수량은 전년에 비해 70% 수준에 머물고 있으며, 특히 한라산 지역 강수량은 지난해 절반 수준에 그치고 있습니다.
