‘Navy base opponents deserve special pardons’
Governor says it’s Seoul’s responsibility to restore peace in Gangjeong

Governor Won Hee-ryong says the national government should issue special pardons for the Gangjeong residents punished for their activities against the construction in their community of the Jeju Civilian-Military Complex Port.

Mr. Won said doing so was essential to restoring peace to the village.

He argued that it was Seoul’s responsibility to ease tensions sparked by the national project in the community.

The province delivered the governor’s recommendation to the national government Tuesday.

원희룡 지사가 민군복합형관광미항 관련 사법처리자들의 특별사면을 건의했습니다.

원 지사는 강정마을이 평화로운 공동체로 회복하기 위해서는 사법적 제재로 고통 받는 주민들에 대한 사면복권이 반드시 이뤄져야 한다고 강조했습니다.

대통령 제주 공약인 사면 복권과 공동체 회복사업은 공약 이전에 국책사업에 따른 국민의 아픔을 해소하기 위한 국가 책무라고 밝혔습니다.

제주도는 사면 복권 건의문을 오늘(26일) 정부에 전달할 예정입니다.
