Navy base opponents excluded from pardon list
Trials still underway for dozens of Gangjeong residents
In what was a shock to many, the Moon Jae-in administration did not include Gangjeong base opponents among the list of people it pardoned.
The national government on Friday granted pardons to over 64-hundred people, including those involved in a brutal crackdown on evictees in a Seoul redevelopment district.
463 Gangjeong residents who had received varying degrees of punishment for their actions in opposition to the construction of a navy base in their community did not make the cut. Neither did opponents to the Milyang transmission tower on the mainland.
Analysts say trials are still underway for some 100 people involved in the navy base opposition, and that’s why the group as a whole was left off the pardon list.
