2 years in prison for accepting bribes to submit refugee applications

A local immigration official has been sentenced to prison for accepting bribes from undocumented foreigners.

Jeju District Court Judge Hwang Mi-jeong sentenced the 61-year-old, surnamed Im, to two years behind bars.

The civil servant was found guilty of accepting bribes in exchange for submitting applications for refugee status.

The judge found that Im had planned and organized the violations and that the crime had created administrative chaos in the Jeju immigration Office.
