4. Jeju’s dolphin population swells to 117
13 more than in 2012

Researchers say more dolphins are living in Jeju waters compared to five years ago.

The whale and dolphin center within the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute says 117 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live in coastal waters.

That’s 13 more than in 2012.

Legislation designed to preserve the marine ecosystem went into effect in June 2012. Institute representatives credit those laws and the release of once-captive dolphins into local waters for the population increase.

남방큰돌고래 개체수 5년새 13마리 늘어

제주 연안에 서식하는 남방큰돌고래의 개체수가 최근 5년동안 모두 13마리 늘어난 것으로 조사됐습니다.

국립수산과학원 고래연구센터는 지난해 제주 연안에서 남방큰돌고래 개체수를 조사한 결과 모두 117마리가 관찰됐다고 밝혔습니다.

이는 5년전인 2012년 104마리보다 13마리 늘어난 것입니다.

고래연구센터는 지난 2012년 6월 해앙생태계 보전 법률 제정 이후 돌고래 방류 사업 등의 보호 노력이 성과를 거두고 있는 것으로 보고 있습니다.
