‘Military trials in 1948 were illegal’

A local court began hearing arguments about whether to allow retrials for survivors of the April Third Incident who were convicted of various offenses related to the incident.

According to a survivors’ association, the hearing began at 2 p.m. Monday at Jeju District Court.

18 survivors testified about the unfair treatment they feel they received during summary military trials some 70 years ago.

The survivors applied for the retrial at Jeju District Court last April. They claim the military trials in 1948 were illegal.

재심을 청구한 수형인 생존자 18명은 이날 법원에서 군사재판 당시 피해 상황 등을 증언할 예정입니다.

70년 만에 4.3 군사 재판에 대한 재심 청구가 받아들여질지 심리 결과에 관심이 쏠리고 있습니다.

한편 4.3 수형인 생존자들은 1948년 당시 군사재판은 불법이었다며 지난해 4월 제주지방법원에 4.3 재심청구서를 제출했습니다.
