4. Thatching underway at Jeju Folk Village
Workers redoing roofs on 100 traditional houses

Visitors to Jeju Folk Village in Pyoseon-myeon can observe the yearly rethatching of traditional houses in the community.

Workers are redoing the roofs on about 100 homes over the next month. Organizers have also created a space for visitors to try themselves to weave the dry vegetation for the roofs.

Unlike in other areas, thatching is not done with straw in Jeju, but with another natural material called “sae.”

제주민속촌 봄 맞이 초가지붕 잇기 한창

서귀포시 표선면 제주민속촌이 봄을 맞아 초가지붕 잇기 작업을 벌이고 있습니다.

제주민속촌은 이달 한달동안 100여 채의 전통초가를 대상으로 옛 전통방식 그대로 초가지붕 잇기 작업을 실시한다고 밝혔습니다.

이 기간 우리의 전통문화를 경험할 수 있도록 '집줄놓기 체험장'도 운영 됩니다.

제주도의 초가는 볏짚을 쓰는 타 지방과 달리 자연 재료인 새를 사용해 지붕을 이어왔습니다.
