‘Efforts to boost attendance are working’

Efforts to get more students to attend the island’s small schools seem to be working.

In 2015, the national government said 40 elementary schools had too few students and either needed to close or merge with other institutions. The Jeju Provincial Office of Education says that number fell to 33 last year. Put another way, the percentage of at-risk schools fell from 64 percent of island schools to 53 percent.

The education office says more students are going to the island’s small schools since it launched a project to revitalize them. That initiative includes the construction of multi-unit residential buildings around small rural schools.


통폐합 대상 작은학교 감소세 '뚜렷'

작은학교 활성화 대책으로 도내 통폐합 대상이던 소규모 학교가 크게 줄었습니다.

제주도교육청에 따르면 정부가 권고한 통폐합 대상 제주지역 초등학교는 지난 2015년 40군데에서 지난해 33군데로 7개교 감소했습니다.

작은 학교가 차지하는 비율도 지난 2015년 64%에서 지난해 53%로 10%포인트 줄었습니다

이는 공동주택 건립 등 읍,면지역 작은학교 활성화 대책으로 전입 학생수가 크게 늘었기 때문으로 분석됐습니다.
