1. Official April 3rd Incident memorial period ends
80 events held to mark 70th anniversary

The official memorial period for the April Third Incident ended Tuesday.

This year was the 70th anniversary of the incident. Provincial officials say that between March 21th and April 10th there were roughly 80 memorial events??more than double the number last year. They included art and cultural events, exhibitions, human rights education, and other commemorations.

The president’s participation in the main service on April 3rd and a memorial exhibition at Seoul’s (광화문) Gwanghwamun brought national attention to the incident.

Even though the official memorial period is over, the province still plans to hold academic conferences and international forums related to the incident.

4·3 추념기간 종료…"전국화 계기"

지난달 말부터 진행됐던 70주년 4.3 희생자 추념기간이 10일 종료된 가운데
다양한 성과를 거둔 것으로 평가됐습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 지난달 21일부터 어제까지 20여 일 동안 진행된 추념기간에 4.3 관련 예술 문화 공연과 전시회, 인권교육, 추모 기념 사업 등
지난해보다 두 배까이 늘어난 80여 차례 추모 행사가 마련됐습니다.

특히 추념식 당일 대통령이 참석했고 서울 광화문에서 4.3 추모 전시회 등이 열리며 4.3을 전국적으로 알리고 관심을 불러일으키는 계기가 됐습니다.

제주특별자치도는 추념기간 이후에도 4.3 관련 학술대회와 국제 포럼 등을 개최할 계획입니다.
