Asian cruise industry growing by leaps and bounds

The Asian cruise industry is growing more than 20 percent every year.

The growth is noticeable especially in East Asian countries of China, Japan and Korea.

The countries are making efforts to further expand the industry.

China with the largest number of cruise passengers has greatly increased the number of cruise ships docking at the nation’s four major cruise terminals including ones in Shanghai and Tianjin.

Japan is expanding port facilities and attracting international cruise ships to bring 5 million cruise tourists to the country in 2020.

Meanwhile, Korea’s cruise market is growing relatively slowly.

The major market in the Asian cruise industry is China. Among the four million Asian passengers, 60%, or 2.8 million, are Chinese, 260,000 are Singaporeans, another 260,000 are Japanese, and 39,000 are Korean passengers. That’s quite a small number.

‘Domestic market needs to expand’

Experts point out that the domestic market needs to be expanded for qualitative growth of the industry.

Some at the forum say that the Pan-East Sea cruise routes need to be developed in cooperation with Japan, Russia, China and North Korea .

The Asian cruise industry cannot grow any faster because of Chinese policies. We’re discussing ways forward to diversify markets and return profits to area residents.

1,700 cruise experts from 16 different countries including Taiwan and Japan attended the cruise forum,
