5. Helmets to be mandatory for bicyclists
Fine of up to ￦200,000 for riding while drunk

It will soon be mandatory for bicyclists to wear helmets, while anyone who rides a bike while drunk will soon face fines.

Jeju City officials say a revision to the Road Traffic Act requires all bicyclists and their passengers to wear helmets beginning September 29th.

Anyone who rides while intoxicated will be fined up to 200,000 won, but there are no regulations on the books yet to penalize people who don’t wear helmets.

The city will run a pilot program to lend out helmets for free at 11 public bike rental stations.

자전거 안전모 미착용·음주 운전 '벌금'

앞으로 자전거를 탈 때 안전모 착용이 의무화되고 음주운전에 대해 벌금 처분을 받게 됩니다.

제주시에 따르면 개정된 도로교통법에 따라 다음달 29일부터 자전거 운전자와 동승자 모두 안전모 착용이 의무화됩니다.

또한 음주운전으로 적발될 경우 20만 원 이하의 벌금이 부과되지만 안전모에 대해서는 아직까지 별도의 벌칙 규정은 없습니다.

제주시는 공공자전거 대여소 11곳에서 안전모를 무료로 대여해주는 시범사업을 시행할 예정입니다.
