Research predicts negative impact, rise in housing costs

Researchers have predicted that the local economy will be negatively affected if the government allows the expansion of private homestay businesses.

Shin Dong-il (신동일), a researcher at Jeju Research Institute, revealed in his report that an increase of private homestays would lead to excessive competition and eventually an economic slump because of the existing surplus of accommodations in Jeju. The report also showed that as homestays increase, the number of rental brokers will also increase, resulting in a different set of negative side effects.

He added that if shared accommodations expand to urban areas, housing costs would increase, forcing local residents to move out.

연구보고서를 통해 도내 객실공급이 과도한 상황에서
공유숙박까지 허용된다면 과당경쟁 등으로 인해 지역경제가 어려울 것으로 예상했습니다.

특히 공유숙박이 도심지역으로 확대되면
주택 임대료가 가파르게 상승해 지역주민이 점차 거주 지역에서
밀려날 수 있다고 전망했습니다.

아울러 공유숙박 중개업자 급증과 이에따른 부작용도 예상했습니다.
