KCTV sheds light on neglected birthplaces of Korea’s patriots

Following KCTV investigative reports into the poor management of the birthplaces of Korea’s patriots, the provincial council has addressed the concern at a council meeting.

Councilman Hyeon Gil-ho (현길호) pointed out at a budget planning meeting on Friday that while other major cities in the nation have mandates regulating the management of the birthplaces of patriots, Jeju has none. He emphasized the need to make regulations and include it into the budget.

The current law regulating the respectful treatment of independence fighters only focuses on the families of the deceased. There are no legal grounds for the management of birthplaces or historic sites.

KCTV가 보도했던 애국지사 생가에 대한 관리 부실 문제가
제주도의회에서도 도마에 올랐습니다.

제주도의회 현길호 의원은
15일 오전 제주도 추경예산안 심사 자리에서
애국지사 생가를 관리하는 내용의 관련 조례가
서울과 부산 등에는 있지만
제주에는 제정돼 있지 않다고 지적했습니다.

이에따라
독립유공자 예우와
지원에 관한 조례를 제정하고
예산에도 반영해야 한다고 강조했습니다.

실제 현행 독립유공자 예우에 관한 법률은
유족 또는 가족에게 초점을 맞추고 있고
애국지사의 생가나
유적지 등을 관리할 수 있는 근거가 없는 실정입니다.
