3. Songaksan New Ocean Town project facing opposition
10,000+ sign petition to cancel governor’s approval

A committee opposing the Songaksan New Ocean Town development project held a press conference at the provincial council meeting hall on the 9th. Committee members said that the provincial government should cancel its approval of a Chinese company to develop the Songaksan area.

They stressed that the province has caused huge damage to local historical and cultural heritage by indiscriminately accepting Chinese capital.

More than 10 thousand people joined the petition started by the Jeju Olle Foundation. The campaign was also joined by the Catholic Diocese of Cheju and other organizations to request the annulment of the local government’s approval of the Songaksan New Ocean Town development project.

They added that small lodging facilities in Moseulpo will go out of business if a large player enters the already saturated industry in areas near the Songaksan Mountain.

송악산 개발 반대대책위원회는
9일 오전 제주도의회 도민의 방에서 기자회견을 열고
대대손손 물려줘야 할 역사문화유적을 훼손하는
중국자본의 송악산 개발을
제주도가 허락할 이유가 없다고 주장했습니다.

특히 송악산 뉴오션타운 조성사업 반대서명에
제주올레와 천주교 제주교구 생태환경위원회 등
각계각층에서 참여해 1만명을 넘어섰다고 강조했습니다.

또 숙박시설의 과잉공급으로 휴폐업이 속출하고 있는 가운데
송악산 일대에 대규모 숙박시설이 들어서면
모슬포 지역의 영세숙박시설은 초토화될 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
