1. Governor wants to put mayoral election to a public vote
Provincial council to decide whether to implement local referendum

The provincial government is pushing for a revision bill of the Jeju Special Act to directly elect mayors of administrative cities of the island. However, controversy is brewing over the local government’s proposal to ask islander’s opinion on the matter.

The provincial council passed the motion for the mayoral election submitted by the provincial office at its regular session this February.

Council members will hold a board meeting on May 16th to decide whether to implement a local referendum. The local government stated that it will fall in line with the council’s decision.

Some provincial council members said that the local referendum will only cause greater confusion and conflict among local residents.

However, the bill’s fate still remains unclear due to the Seoul’s opposal to mayoral elections.

혼란을 야기할 가능성이 높은 만큼
반대쪽에 무게가 실린 것으로 알려졌습니다.

제주도는
의회에서 만약 주민투표 실시에 반대하면
이를 수용해
주민투표 없이
행정시장 직선제를 담은
제주특별법 개정작업을 추진한다는 계획입니다.

하지만 행정시장 직선제에 대해
정부에서 반대하고 있는 만큼
추진은 상당히 어려울 것으로 예상되고 있습니다.
