2. Local lawmakers request stronger regulations for large retailers
Concerns raised over small-medium merchants losing market share

The provincial council demanded the provincial government to implement administrative countermeasures for large enterprises entering the local retail market.

This request followed after E-mart’s announcement to launch its large-sized supermarket "No Brand" in Jeju. E-mart is one of the largest retail companies in Korea.

The provincial committee on agricultural, fisheries and livestock economy held a question and answer session to evaluate the progress of E-mart launching “No Brand” in Aradong, Jeju City.

Provincial council members requested the local government to impose stronger regulations against large corporate-owned supermarkets from entering the local retail market. Large corporations are currently required to only register new openings.

Local authorities replied that they made negotiations with E-mart to postpone the opening date from May 18th to the end of this month. The local government also restricted the saleable item categories at “No Brand”. The store will be forced to close twice a month.

17일 긴급 현안 질의를 통해
대형 마트 자체브랜드 개점에 따른 진행상황을 점검했습니다.

이 자리에서 도의원들은
대기업의 준대규모점포 개점이 신고 사항이어서
앞으로 추가 입점을 규제할 방법이 없는 만큼
지역상권을 보호하는 측면에서
보다 강화된 규제가 필요하다고 강조했습니다.

이에 대해 제주도는
해당 매장과 협의를 통해
영업개시일을 당초 18일에서 이달 말로 연기하고
취급 품목을 제한하는 한편
월 2회 휴업하기로 조정했다고 밝혔습니다.
