3. Haenyeo divers rally to protest dissolution of heritage department
Province undergoes organization restructuring

Haenyeo divers in Jeju held a large-scale rally protesting the island's plan for organizational restructuring.

More than 1,000 female divers from the Jeju Fishing Village Leaders' Association and the Jeju Haenyeo Association, consisting of 102 fishing villages in the province, held a rally in front of the Jeju Provincial Government on the morning of the 26th. They urged the province to withdraw its plan to reduce the size of the haenyeos’ cultural heritage department.

They argued that terminating the haenyeo department just 3 years after being instituted can wipe out the progress it has made to preserve and globalize the haenyeo culture.

The protest comes after a push by the province to readjust the budget to free up 2 billion won and to improve organizational efficiency amid the COVID 19 crisis.

3. 해녀 대규모 집회…"해녀유산과 통합 반대"

제주지역 해녀들이
제주도가 추진하는 조직개편에 반대하며
대규모 집회를 열었습니다.

도내 102개 어촌계로 이뤄진 제주도어촌계장연합회와
제주도해녀협회 소속 해녀 1천여 명은
26일 오전 제주도청 앞에서 집회를 열고
제주도의 해녀문화유산과 축소 통합 방침을
철회할 것을 촉구했습니다.

이들은
해녀 전담부서가 신설된 지 3년 만에 없어지게 되면
해녀문화 보전과 세계화 등 주요 사업에도
차질이 우려된다며 이 같이 주장했습니다.

한편 제주도는
코로나19 위기 속에서
예산 20억 원을 절감하고
조직 효율성을 높이기 위해
조직개편을 추진하고 있습니다.
