3. Economic fallout of Jeju tourism estimated at ￦1.5T
Number of tourists decreases by 39%

It is estimated that the damage to Jeju’s tourism industry will reach 1.5 trillion won due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the service data released by the Jeju Research Institute, over 3.6 million tourists visited Jeju in the first five months of this year, which was a decrease in 39 percent from the same period last year.

Due to the decrease in the number of tourists, the estimated damage to the tourism industry was calculated at 1.57 trillion won. The actual damage to date has been calculated at 720 billion won, which does not include duty-free shops and casinos for foreigners.

The institute stressed the urgency for the Jeju Island to be designated as a special area for responding to the industrial crisis.

제주연구원이 발표한 용역 자료에 따르면
올 들어 5월까지 제주를 찾은 관광객은
366만 8천여 명으로
지난해 같은기간보다 39% 감소했습니다.

이로 인한 관광산업 피해액은
1조 5천 107억 원으로 집계됐으며
이 가운데 외국인 면세점과 카지노 피해액을 제외한
제주관광산업 실질 피해규모는
7천 200여 억원으로 추정됐습니다.

제주연구원은 피해 대책으로
제주도가 정부에 건의한 산업위기대응 특별지역 지정이
시급하다고 강조했습니다.
