National Assembly passes revised Jeju 4.3 Special Act
Marks significant progress for bereaved families of April 3rd Incident


The revised Jeju 4.3 Special Act, a bill including the compensation of the honor of victims from the April 3rd Incident was passed at the National Assembly on February 26.

The National Assembly held a plenary session on the afternoon of the 26th and proposed a bill to revise the Jeju 4.3 Special Act, which passed with 199 votes. There were 5 oppositions and 25 abstentions out of 229 lawmakers in attendance at the National Assembly.

The final passage of the special law amendment by the National Assembly came seven months after the bill was introduced at the 21st National Assembly after it was canceled during the 20th National Assembly.

The revised Jeju 4.3 Special Act contains a legal basis for the recovery of the honor and compensation for each victim and their bereaved families, which gives significant meaning separate from the revision of the previous special law.

4.3 특별법 개정안이 국회를 최종 통과한 건
지난 20대 국회에서 무산된 이후
21대 국회에 법안이 상정된지 7개월 만 입니다.

이번 4.3특별법 전부 개정안에는
피해자와 유족 개개인에 대한
명예회복과 보상에 대한 법적 근거를 담고 있어
이전 특별법 개정과는 차원이 다른 큰 의미를 주고 있습니다.
