Sex assault case evidence submitted 20 years later
Prosecutors indicted a man a day prior to statute of limitation expiration

It was belatedly confirmed that the culprit of a local sexual assault case from 20 years ago was handed over to trial, one day before the statute of limitations expired with evidence derived from genetic analysis.

According to the Jeju District Court, a man in his 50s has been indicted and is being tried for sneaking into a house in March 2001 and raping a woman who was in the house before running away.

This case was unsolved until a DNA analysis was carried out in March 2019 which revealed that the DNA found in a bundle of tissues left at the scene was identical to the alleged assaulter. Following the results, the Jeju Supreme Prosecutor's Office indicted the accused man on March 2nd, one day before the statute of limitations expired.



3. 20년 전 성폭행범 DNA로 지목, 공소시효 하루 전 기소

20년 전 제주에서 발생한 성폭행 사건의 범인이
유전자 분석을 통해 공소시효 하루 전에 재판에 넘겨진 사실이 뒤늦게 확인됐습니다.

제주지방법원에 따르면 지난 2001년 3월 한 가정집에서 몰래 들어가 집에 있던 여성을 성폭행하고 달아난 혐의로
50대 남성이 기소돼 재판을 받고 있습니다.

이 사건은 미제사건으로 남아 있다 지난 2019년 3월 대검찰청으로부터 당시 현장에 남아있던 휴지 뭉치에서 발견된 DNA가 기소된 남성과 일치한다는 분석결과가 나옴에 따라
제주지검이 공소시효를 하루 앞둔 지난 3월 2일 기소했습니다.

특히 이 남성은 성범죄 18건과 강력범죄 165건 등 183건의 범죄를 저지른 혐의로 검거돼
지난 2009년 징역 18년을 선고받고 복역중이며 현재 제주교도소로 이감돼 재판을 받고 있습니다.
