Ideal Cash Crop for Jeju Growers


The red fruits of the cactus are busily harvested.
It’s dragon fruit or pitaya commonly grown in sub-tropical regions such as Vietnam.

The species was introduced three years ago, and ten farmers grow the red-fleshed fruit in Jeju.

The average sugar content of the crop is 12 degrees brix this year. That’s one degree higher than a year ago.
The quality of the fruit has improved since the species was first introduced.

Research is underway to identify the amount of irrigation and harvest timing for producing sweeter and bigger fruit.

Red-fleshed dragon fruit is rarely grown on the mainland.


And its harvest season is between citrus seasons and a lower initial investment is required for the early stage of farming, compared with other subtropical fruits. Therefore, the fruit can be another of the island’s growing list of cash crops.

Red dragon fruit requires less investment and labor unlike citrus hybrids. Its flesh is soft and good to enjoy.


The (함덕) Hamdeok Agricultural Cooperative Federation and the Jeju Agricultural Research & Extension Services will regularly carry out on-site consultations and support red dragon fruit growers to settle the fruit as an income crop.

베트남 등 아열대 지역에서 널리 재배되는 용과입니다.


겉과 속이 모두 빨간 레드용과 품종으로
3년 전부터 제주에 도입해
도내 10농가가 재배하고 있습니다.


올해 수확된 용과는
평균 당도가 12브릭스로
지난해보다 1브릭스 정도 높아졌습니다.

도입된 이후 점차 자리를 잡으면서
품질이 향상된 것으로 분석됩니다.

품질 향상을 위해서 관수량 설정이라든지 수확 시기별 과실 품질 조사를 지금 추진하고 있어서 더 당도가 높고 대과종인 적색종 용과를 생산하기 위해서….


아직 전국적으로도 재배하는 곳이 많지 않은 레드용과.


감귤 출하 시기와 달라 틈새 작목으로 주목받고 있고,
다른 아열대 작물과 비교해
가온비 등
투자 비용도 크지 않은 편이어서
농가 소득이 좋을 것으로 예상됩니다.

(재배) 비용이 좀 적게 들고 만감류는 좀 손이 많이 가는데 홍용과는 일손이 덜 가고 식감도 부드럽고 먹기도 좋아서….


함덕농협과 농업기술원에서는
현장 컨설팅 등을 주기적으로 추진하면서
레드용과가 소득작물로 정착할 수 있도록 지원할 예정입니다.
