Farm Alert Systems Fight Heat

Meant to keep crops warmer during cooler times of the year, in the summer, the temperature inside is over 35 degrees, hitting 38 degrees with the windows and doors closed.
Farmers must routinely check temperatures and open windows to control these high inside temperatures.
But it’s not as easy as it sounds to check greenhouse temperatures frequently throughout the day.


To deal with this issue, this farm recently installed a temperature sensing and alarm system, with support from the Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services.
When the interior temperature of the greenhouse rises above a certain threshold, the system immediately alerts a designated mobile phone, and the greenhouse's windows are automatically opened in order to encourage air flow.


There has also been an auxiliary power generator installed to take over electrical duties in the case of a power failure.

The alarm rings whenever the temperature climbs too high. My wife lets me know the switchgear is working, and I can see the temperature drop.

The newly-installed system can also help prevent fires in the winter.


It can detect fire based on the temperature in a greenhouse, send an alert to a designated cell phone, and activate a fire extinguisher.
CCTV cameras mean farmers can check their greenhouses at any time.

Weather-related disasters are increasing. Many greenhouses have been built on the east side of Jeju. This temperature-based alert system is especially useful for farmers who live far from their farms.


The Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services will continue to supply safety devices to greenhouses in order to reduce damage to crops due to high temperatures or fires.
