Free Laptops for Middle Schoolers

At a middle school in Jeju City, an inspection of the laptops to be distributed to students is underway.
This year, newly enrolled middle school students are eligible for their own laptop.


This is part of an election campaign pledge by the superintendent of the Jeju Provincial Office of Education, (김광수) Kim Gwang-su, to strengthen the digital competency of the island’s youth.
Mr. Kim, who visited the middle school and delivered the laptops himself, emphasized that the laptops would be used as learning tools during class.

Honestly, I will play games a little bit and I will listen to a lot of educational programs like EBS.

The laptops, which are provided free of charge for a period of six years, can be used at school and at home until the students graduate from high school or if they transfer to another school in a different region.


In case the students need to get their laptops repaired, some four maintenance offices are in operation.
The laptops also have web safety software installed to block access to harmful sites and in case a student loses their computer, there’s also a location tracker.


If a student accidentally damages their laptop, the cost of the repair will not exceed a 20 percent deductible.
Students who did not apply for a laptop in advance are still eligible to receive a laptop if they apply by the end of the year.

The Jeju Provincial Office of Education will complete the laptop distribution program by the 17th of this month and plans to allocate 12.8 billion won this year to continue providing laptops to new middle school students in 2024.

최대한 활용될 수 있도록 하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

노트북을 받아든 학생들은 설레이는 마음을 숨기지 못했습니다.

6년간 무상 임대 방식의 노트북은
학교와 가정에서 이용하다

고등학교를 졸업하거나
다른 지방의 학교로 전학갈 때 반납하면 됩니다.

사용기간 중 수리가 필요할 경우에 대비해

학생 전용 노트북 유지관리 지역센터 4군데가 운영됩니다.

또 청소년들이 유해사이트에 접근을 막고 분실에 대비해
노트북의 위치추적을 할 수 있는 기능을 달도록 했습니다.

청소년의 실수로 노트북이 고장이 나더라도

수리비 부담 비율을
20%를 넘지 않도록 했습니다.

또 임대 방식이라는 조건 때문에
노트북을 사전 신청하지 않은 학생들도
연말까지
신청할 경우 지급할 방침입니다.

제주도교육청은 노트북 지급을 오는 17일까지 마무리하고

올해에도 128억원을 편성해
내년도 중학교 신입생들에게
노트북 지급을 이어나갈 예정입니다.
