Helpless Against Wild Dogs Damages


On the 3rd of last month, dozens of chickens and ducks died at a livestock farm in Jeju City.
One duck was injured.
The wire fence of the farm had a large hole in it.
They were bitten or injured severely by wild dogs.

I woke up in the morning and saw this. Yes, it was the dogs. They killed every chicken and took them away.

About 10 chickens and ducks were damaged at this farm.
Feathers are scattered around the farm, and surviving ducks are hiding in corners in fear.
A nearby chicken coop was also attacked by wild dogs and is now empty.

Area residents say that damages to livestock have become more severe as the sightings of wild dogs have become more frequent in this area recently.

About 17 or 18 of them are wandering around. They break into chicken coops and houses. We also lost about 30 or 40 animals.

As wild dogs are not categorized as harmful animals by law, if one captures a wild dog, it is considered an act of animal abuse.
In fact, there is almost no way to deal with it except for repairing the chicken coop or putting up a wire fence again.


There are estimated to be over 2,000 wild dogs in rural areas, and they are causing damage even in the outskirts of the city.
They also attack large livestock such as cattle and goats.
More than 800 chickens and ducks have been reported to be killed or injured.


In the past three years, more than 1,000 wild dogs have been caught in the Jeju City area, but it is difficult to catch them even with a specialized rescue team.
As abandoned dogs turn feral, trapped in a legal gray area, severe damages to farmers continue to be repeated.



포획도 못하는 '야생들개'…피해 속수무책


지난 3일, 제주시내 가축 사육장에서
기르던 닭과 오리가 집단 폐사했습니다.

오리 한 마리도 상처를 입었습니다.

사육장 철조망은 커다란 구멍이 났습니다.

야생 들개에 의해 물려 죽거나 크게 다친 겁니다.

아침에 일어나서 가보니 저렇게 됐어요. 네 들개 들개. 닭 한 마리도 없이 죽여서 물어 가버렸어요

이 곳 사육장에서는 기르던 닭과 오리 10여 마리가
한꺼번에 피해를 입었습니다.

사육장 안은 깃털이 사방에 흩어져 있고

살아 남은 오리도 겁에 질려 구석에 숨어 있습니다.

인근에 있는 닭장도 들개 피해를 입어
텅 비었습니다.

주민들은
최근 이 일대에 들개 출몰이 잦아지면서
가축 피해도 심해졌다고 말합니다.

한 일곱 마리 정도 다니더라고. 하우스나 닭장을 다 뜯고 들어가지. 우리도 30,40마리는 피해 입었죠.

다른 유해동물 처럼 포획하려고 해도
현행법상 학대 행위에 해당돼
닭장을 고치거나 철조망을 다시 쳐놓는 것 말고는
사실상 대처 방법이 없습니다.

야생화된 들개는 중산간 지역에만
2천마리로 추산되는데
이제는 시 외곽지역까지
범위를 넓히면서 피해를 주고 있습니다.

한우와 염소 같은 대형 가축 뿐 아니라
닭과 오리 피해도 800마리를 넘고 있습니다.

최근 3년 동안 제주시 지역에서 1천 마리를 생포했지만
이미 야생화된 들개는 전문 구조팀도 잡기가 어렵습니다.

법 사각지대에 놓여 포획할 수도 없는
유기견들이 야생화 되면서
결국 농가에 큰 피해를 주는
악순환이 되풀이 되고 있습니다.
