The Jeju Police Agency improperly applied standards with an unmanned traffic device in Global Education City, leading to excessive fines for drivers.

This device, placed on a regular road near an international school, was mistakenly enforced using child protection zone standards instead of general road rules over the past year. Consequently, drivers received excessive fines for traffic light or speeding violations.

It has been revealed that 700 of 830 cases in which excessive fines were imposed have already been paid. The overcharged amount totals approximately 18 million KRW out of the 40 million KRW collected.

The Jeju Police Agency intends to notify those who have paid and will process refunds for the overcharged fines. For the 130 cases that have not yet been paid, the agency plans to correctly reissue the fines.



자치경찰, 무인단속 과태료 '잘못 부과'…환급 조치

제주도자치경찰단이 영어교육도시내 무인교통단속장치를 운영하며
잘못된 기준을 적용해 과태료를 과다하게 부과한 것으로 나타났습니다.

해당 무인교통단속장치는 국제학교 보호구역 인접 일반도로에 설치됐으나 지난 1년여간
어린이보호구역 기준으로 적용돼 신호 또는 속도위반 과태료를 기준보다 많게 부과한 것으로 내부 점검 과정에서 확인됐습니다.

현재까지 가중 부과된 830건 가운데 700건이 납부됐으며 부과금액 약 4천만 원 중 가중 부과된 금액은 1천 800만 원으로 추정되고 있습니다.

자치경찰단은 납부자에게 안내문을 발송하고
가중부과감을 환급 처리할 계획이며 미수납된 130건에 대해서는 재부과 조치하기로 했습니다.
