The April 3rd Art Festival, now in its 32nd year, has opened and is unfolding across the island.
With participation from young and international artists, it is establishing itself as an international art festival centered on the theme of April 3rd Incident.

“I now dream of a happy life,”
“I wanted to be a literary girl.”
Grandmothers, who are April 3rd survivors, wrote down their past thoughts and hopes for the future on top of compensation forms.
These photographic works provoke thought on whether the compensation process is reducing the April 3rd Incident to a mere historical fact and prematurely imposing forgiveness and reconciliation.

The 32nd April 3rd Art Festival opened under the theme “Blazing Wind, Carried Light.”

[Slug] 68 Domestic and international artists participate, First time held simultaneously in Seogwipo


This year's festival includes 46 local artists, as well as 22 international artists from regions with historical backgrounds similar to Jeju’s, making it the largest festival to date.
Also, for the first time, it is being held simultaneously in the Seogwipo area, adding greater significance.

In addition, a special exhibition features young artists who present various forms of art to carry the April 3rd theme into the next generation.

At the Jeju Museum of Art, a collaborative exhibition is being held featuring works that reexamine major modern and contemporary grassroots movements related to April 3rd through art, further expanding the scope of April 3rd art.

We are growing into a true international art festival. Also, young artists are holding a separate exhibition at Sanjicheon Gallery to continue the spirit of April 3rd Incident.
On top of that, we are holding simultaneous openings at the Seogwipo Arts Center. So the April 3rd Art Festival can now be experienced across all of Jeju, in both Jeju City and Seogwipo.

명실상부한 국제 미술제로 나아가고 있고요. 그리고 청년 작가들이 별도로 산지천갤러리에서 전시를 함으로 해서 4·3의 정신을 이어가는 그런 전시로 기획해서 진행하고 있습니다. 그뿐만 아니라 서귀포 예술의전당에서 동시에 개막을 하고 있거든요. 그래서 제주시와 서귀포 제주도 전역에서 4·3미술제를 관람할 수 있습니다.

4.3유족인 할머니들이
보상금 신청서 위에 과거의 생각과 미래의 기대를 적어냈습니다.

보상금 지급 절차에서
4.3이 단순한 역사적 사실로만 게재되며
용서와 화해를
섣부르게 강요하는 건 아닌지 생각하게 하는 사진 작품입니다.

4.3미술제가
'타오르는 바람, 이어 든 빛'을 주제로 개막했습니다.

[국내외 작가 68명 참여…첫 서귀포 동시 개최]
이번 미술제는
46명의 도내 작가에 더해
다른 지역과
제주와 비슷한 역사적 배경을 지닌
해외 22명의 작가가 새롭게 합류하며
역대 최대 규모로 펼쳐지고 있습니다.

또 올해 처음으로
서귀포 지역에서도 동시 개최되며 의미를 더하고 있습니다.

제주도립미술관에서는
4.3과 연관된
근현대사의 주요 민중운동을
예술로 재조명한 작품들을 볼 수 있는
협력전시가 진행되며
4.3예술의 범위를 더욱 넓히고 있습니다.
