Around this time of year, Gapado Island welcomes a growing number of tourists drawn by its beautiful green barley fields.
However, the island’s unspoiled beauty is being marred by the illegal dumping of waste.

Illegal Dumping Tarnishes the Beauty of Gapado

Gapado Island draws many visitors with its vast green barley fields, vibrant canola flowers, and scenic coastline.

But nearby Gapado’s only recycling center, various types of waste?wooden planks, scrap metal, and even recycling bins?are strewn about.

Warning signs stating that illegal dumping will result in fines are blatantly disregarded.

And that's not all.


The nearby undergrowth is in even worse condition.

Discarded shrimp, mussel, and conch shells give off a foul smell and attract flies.

Recycling bins marked for emergency use are left to rust, giving the area an appearance of a garbage dump.

[Slug] Dumping sites near walking trails discourage visitors

Each of these dumping sites is located right next to walking trails, unsettling visitors and detracting from their experience.

"We will confirm the situation on-site and dispose of the garbage quickly."
"We will crackdown on illegal dumping and monitor recycling bins."

An official from Daejeong-eup stated that after inspecting the illegally dumped waste, they will reinforce recycling bin management and regulations and remove the waste promptly.



[Slug] 66 cases of illegal dumping caught last year

Last year, 66 cases of illegal dumping were reported in Seogwipo City, resulting in fines totaling 5.6 million won.

Although more CCTV cameras have helped reduce violations, illegal dumping continues, underscoring the need for greater civic responsibility.

수려하고 좋은 환경에 쓰레기가 있어서 상당히 마음이 안 좋습니다. 이런 게 정리되고 깨끗하게 되면 더없이 좋을 것 같습니다.




대정읍 관계자는 현장 확인을 통해
빠른 시일 내 무단 투기된 폐기물과 쓰레기를 처리하고
무단투기 단속과
재활용 수거함 관리를 강화하겠다고 밝혔습니다.

66건의 무단 투기가 적발돼
560만원의 과태료가 부과됐습니다.
