On June 5, World Environment Day, an international forum is being held in Jeju to discuss responses to plastic pollution and to seek a sustainable environment.
Civic groups are also raising awareness about the severity of plastic pollution and are calling for stronger regulations.

A giant flag, 30 meters wide and 20 meters tall, depicting eyes formed with black-and-white portraits of 6,472 people from around the world, has been installed in front of the Jeju International Convention Center.

The performance was organized by civic groups to deliver a message about reducing plastic production in observance of World Environment Day.

The message emphasizes that people around the world, including those in Korea, are watching their governments and demanding a stronger plastics treaty.

A report on the severe plastic pollution of Jeju’s beaches was also revealed.

[Slug] High microplastic levels at Gimnyeong Beach far exceed national average

A civic group survey from April showed that large microplastic concentrations at (김녕) Gimnyeong Beach were about four times higher than the average of 20 coastal areas nationwide.
Medium-sized microplastics were also found to be 21 times higher than the national average.

[Slug] Styrofoam buoys from fish farms identified as major pollutant

The main source of pollution was identified as expanded polystyrene from buoys used in fish farms.
To accurately assess pollution levels, the investigation was carried out in a remote area of Gimnyeong Beach.

Most of the pollutants were particles originating from plastic buoys. Given the low number of fish farms in Jeju, it’s likely they drifted from the southern coast. Jeju must make efforts, but collaboration with other regions is also essential to solve the issue.

[Slug] 2025 World Environment Day at Jeju International Convention Center

This year’s event, held in Korea for the first time in 28 years, is attended by over 7,000 participants, including ministers and vice ministers from various countries, ambassadors to Korea, heads of international organizations, corporations, and environmental groups from Korea and abroad.

Various forums and promotional booths on environmental policies are being held under the theme of ending plastic pollution.

심각하다는 조사 결과도 공개됐습니다.

[김녕 해변 미세플라스틱 농도, 전국 평균 크게 웃돌아]
시민단체들이
지난 4월 김녕 해변을 조사한 결과
대형 미세플라스틱 농도는
전국 20개 해안의 평균 오염도보다 약 4배 가량 높았습니다.

중형 미세플라스틱 농도도
전국 평균 오염도에 비해 무려 21배 높은 것으로 나타났습니다.

주요 오염원은
양식장 부표에서 발생하는 발포폴리스티렌으로 확인됐습니다.

이번 조사는
실제 오염 정도를 명확히 파악하기 위해
김녕 해변에서도 인적이 드문 곳을 대상으로 이뤄졌습니다.
