The number of students in emotional crisis in the Jeju region is increasing each year.
In particular, attempts at suicide and self-harm have surged, clearly exposing the limits of school-level responses alone.
However, the budget and staffing support needed to address the issue are instead being reduced.

The number of students reporting emotional crises continues to rise annually.

According to the Jeju Provincial Office of Education, the number of students in Jeju attempting suicide or self-harm increased from 25 cases in 2023 to 30 in 2024, and then surged to 71 in 2025?nearly tripling over three years.

The number of students receiving emergency psychological support as a result has also steadily increased.

The figure rose from 152 students in 2023 to 195 in 2024, and to 217 in 2025.

However, the budget and personnel needed to support these students have either decreased or remained stagnant.
[Slug] Hospital-based Wee Center budget slashed
The hospital-based Wee Center, a specialized institution that helps high-risk youth vulnerable to suicide and self-harm recover emotionally and receive treatment,
serves as a critical safety net by providing not only counseling but also medical intervention and psychological therapy.

The operating budget was sharply reduced from KRW 564 million last year to KRW 337 million this year.

The operating budget for the text counseling service for students at suicide risk was also reduced, from KRW 118 million last year to KRW 89 million this year.

Students who are emotionally distressed or maladjusted to school life come to the hospital-based program for about three months of inpatient treatment, and satisfaction levels are very high. The biggest problem is that we cannot accommodate all the students who need it.

If the widening gap between the growing number of students in crisis and shrinking budgets is not addressed, schools will inevitably face even greater risks.
Stronger support and institutional backing from the educational office are urgently needed.
