Last year, the Jeju economy recorded the highest growth rate in the nation, with exports surging by nearly 80 percent.
Consumer prices and employment indicators also remained relatively stable.
However, production and consumption both declined, and the economic conditions felt by residents remain sluggish.

Exports were clearly the most significant area of growth in Jeju's economy last year.





In fact, Jeju’s export value jumped by about 80 percent from a year earlier, marking the highest increase among the nation’s 17 metropolitan cities and provinces.
At the same time, the consumer price inflation rate, which had weighed heavily on household finances, remained relatively stable at 1.8 percent, lower than the national average.
The employment rate also rose by 0.5 percentage points, showing a modest recovery.



However, as domestic demand continues to stagnate, residents have yet to see a recovery in economic conditions.



Service production fell by 5.4 percent last year, while industrial production declined by 1.6 percent.
Retail sales also dropped by 3.1 percent, indicating a contraction in both production and consumption.
Construction, a key sector of Jeju's economy along with tourism, experienced the most significant decline since record-keeping began, with new orders plummeting by 53.2 percent.

Despite the surge in exports, it is unlikely that this success will "trickle down" to benefit local businesses or increase the incomes of residents.

The export surge, driven by the design-focused semiconductor industry, has had a limited impact on local employment and related industries. This is because there are no local manufacturing plants.

수출 날았지만 내수 추락…구조적 한계 '뚜렷'


지난해 제주경제에서
눈에 띄는 성장세를 보인 건 단연 수출이었습니다.



실제로 제주지역 수출액은
1년 전보다 80% 가량 급증하며
전국 17개 시도 가운데
가장 높은 증가율을 기록했습니다.

이와 함께
서민경제를 압박하던 소비자물가 상승률은
전국 평균보다 낮은 1.8%에 머물며
비교적 안정적인 흐름을 보였습니다.

고용률도 0.5%포인트 상승해 완만한 회복세를 나타냈습니다.


하지만 내수 부진이 지속되면서
도민들이 체감하는 경기는 좀처럼 살아나지 못했습니다.



지난해 서비스업 생산은 5.4% 감소했고
광공업 생산도 1.6% 줄었습니다.

소매판매 역시 3.1% 감소하며
생산과 소비 모두 위축된 것으로 나타났습니다.

특히 관광산업과 함께 제주경제의 또 다른 축인 건설업은
수주액이 53.2%나 급감해
관련 통계 작성 이래 최대 감소폭을 기록했습니다.

지역 상권이나
도민들의 소득 증가로 이어지는 ‘낙수효과’는
기대하기 어려운 실정입니다.
