Since April, vessels carrying electric vehicles have been required to carry dedicated EV firefighting equipment. To strengthen preparedness, the first public-private joint firefighting drill under the new regulations was recently held.

This is a 20,000-ton passenger ferry operating between Jeju and (완도) Wando.
Smoke begins rising from an electric vehicle loaded in the ferry’s vehicle deck, and crew members who spot the incident immediately begin initial response procedures.

Crew members then cover the burning vehicle with a fire suppression blanket and place specialized equipment beneath the vehicle to spray water in an effort to prevent thermal runaway in the battery.
Soon, fire engines arrive at the port one after another.
An aerial ladder truck is also deployed as firefighters work to contain the blaze.

A joint emergency response drill was held based on a scenario in which an electric vehicle catches fire aboard a passenger ferry while approaching its berth.

The exercise involved the Coast Guard, fire authorities, the Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority, and ferry operators.

As this was the first drill conducted since revised regulations made EV firefighting equipment mandatory on passenger ferries in April, participants focused on evaluating crew members' initial response capabilities using onboard firefighting equipment and reviewing interagency coordination systems.

Demand for transporting electric vehicles by ship is increasing rapidly. As a result, carrying dedicated EV firefighting equipment on passenger ferries became mandatory in April. If a fire breaks out while the vessel is underway, assistance from fire authorities is virtually impossible to obtain.
For this reason, rapid initial response by crew members is essential, and ferry operators are strengthening their own training programs.

Vehicle decks are often fully loaded. With the number of electric vehicles increasing significantly these days, extinguishing a fire can be extremely challenging if one occurs. That's why we conduct EV fire suppression drills three times a month.
