Jeju has already transitioned to subtropical conditions, with heat waves increasing and average temperatures on the rise.

The Korea Meteorological Administration analyzed Korea's climate across 30-year periods and found that all four Jeju observation sites met the primary condition for a subtropical climate. Each site recorded eight or more months per year above 10 degrees Celsius, based on data from 1981 to 2010.

If carbon emissions do not decline amid the ongoing warming trend, most of the country is projected to fall under subtropical conditions by the latter half of the 21st century.

The KMA added that ecosystem changes should also be considered when determining whether a region has fully transitioned.

제주 관측 지점 네 곳은 지난 1981년부터 2010년까지 월 평균기온이 10도 이상인 달이 8개월 이상인 아열대 기후 1차 조건을 이미 충족한 것으로 나타났습니다.

온난화 추세 속에 탄소배출이 줄어들지 않을 경우 21세기 후반기에는 전국 대부분 지역이
아열대 기후에 포함될 것으로 예측됐습니다.

기상청은
실제 해당 지역이 아열대 기후로 전환됐는지는
생태계 환경 변화를 함께 고려해 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 밝혔습니다.
