Jeju police seek extradition of Chinese hit-and-run suspect
26-year-old left Korea on day of accident in April

Local police have asked China to extradite a Chinese national suspected of fleeing Jeju after being involved in a hit-and-run here.

The 26-year-old Chinese suspect abruptly left the country on the April day he allegedly hit a 30-year-old Jeju resident with the car he was driving in Yeon-dong, Jeju City.

As part of their investigation, officers with the Jeju Seobu Police Station have officially requested his extradition to face charges here.

Should Chinese officials refuse the request, local authorities will ask them to charge the suspect in China under local laws there. That process is laid out in an extradition treaty signed by China and Korea.

The Chinese suspect has been listed on the wanted list by Interpol but there have yet been no significant breakthroughs in the case.
