Research begins on Hallasan crater lake
Results expected at end of year

Researchers have begun extracting and analyzing the sedimentary layers beneath Hallasan Mountain’s crater lake, Baengnokdam.

For the first time ever, the rock beneath the lake is being drilled to estimate both the age of the mountain and the time period in which volcanic activity happened.

The World Heritage and Hallasan Research Center completed preparations for the drilling on Monday and the work began Tuesday.

Six holes are being drilled into the mountain peak, each 8 centimeters in diameter and 20 meters deep.

Researchers will announce the results of their study around the end of the year. The data will be used when authorities draw up preservation measures for the mountain.

한라산 백록담 퇴적층 시추 연구 시작

제주도가 한라산천연보호구역 지질조사를 위해 사상 처음으로 한라산 백록담 시추 작업을 시작했습니다.

세계유산본부 한라산연구원과 수행기관인 한국지질자원연구원은 5일 한라산 시추를 위한 준비작업을 마친데 이어 오늘부터 본격 조사에 들어갔습니다.

이번 시추는 한라산 분화구 바닥에 지름 8cm, 깊이 20m 이내의 구멍 6개를 뚫어
퇴적층 연대와 화산분출시기 등을 조사하는 방식으로 진행됩니다.

연구 결과는 올해 말 발표 예정으로 추후 한라산의 장기적인 보존계획 수립 등에 활용됩니다.
