It’s the weekend again, and that means Film Focus. Here’s Mike Laidman with what’s new in local theaters

[Report]

This week, for the first time in a long time, there are two new movies opening. And for just as long a time, even longer, they’re both good. There are no ‘throw-away’ flicks this week!

So grab a ticket, settle in, settle down, check in, check out - whatever it is you do, and get ready to explore the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ and a home for the most interesting of children.

Sully (2016, Clint Eastwood)
A pilot saves all aboard during an emergency river landing.

It was Thursday, January 15th, 2009 when the world witnessed the "Miracle on the Hudson." Captain Chesley Sullenberger, nicknamed "Sully," glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River in New York. His efforts saved the lives of all 155 people on board. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career.

Starring Tom Hanks and with Clint Eastwood in the director’s chair, it would have been hard for this one to go off the rails. Indeed, they deliver, and the movie is a quiet, stirring tribute to an everyday hero.

At just over 1.5 hours, the movie moves along at a brisk clip, workmanlike in its approach to the subject matter, and focused in its vision. What emerges is a gem of a film that will make your heart soar.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016, Tim Burton)
A young boy discovers a world of mystery, power, and danger.

Next up this week is what is promising to be a fantastical adventure for kids from director Tim Burton.

When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times, he finds a magical place known as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. But the mystery and danger deepen as he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers... and their powerful enemies. Ultimately, Jacob discovers that only his own special "peculiarity" can save his new friends.

While it follows the traditional arc of all young-adult movies, Burton has managed to bring his usual distinctive flair to this latest work. Eva Green captivates at the titular Miss Peregrine, and the young cast shines, as well. The visuals are unique, wonderful, and fully in line with what one would hope Burton would produce.

All those seeking adventure, here’s your ticket to ride.
