Now that over 25 billion won in damage has been reported in the wake of Typhoon Chaba, national officials have started looking into declaring Jeju a special disaster zone.

The provincial government announced Tuesday that some 14 billion won in damage had been reported in the public sector and more than 11 billion won in the private sector.

The Ministry of Public Safety and Security conducted on-site preliminary examinations on Tuesday and Wednesday and plans a full-fledged investigation into the extent of local damage on Friday.

Ministry officials say that if they conclude the damage is north of nine billion won, they will give Jeju priority in becoming declared a special disaster zone.

태풍 차바로 인한 피해가 250억을 넘는 것으로 잠정 집계된 가운데 오늘부터 특별재난지역 선포에 대한 예비조사가 진행됩니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 국가재난관리정보시스템에 입력된 제18호 태풍 차바로 인한 피해액은
공공시설 141억과 사유시설 111억 원 등 모두 252억 원으로 잠정 집계됐습니다.

이에 따라 국민안전처는 오늘부터 이틀동안 예비조사를 실시하고 이를 바탕으로 오는 14일부터
중앙합동단에 의한 피해사실조사가 이뤄집니다.

특히 예비조사에서 피해액이 선포기준인 90억원을 훨씬 웃돌경우 특별재난지역으로
우선 선포될 수 있다고 국민안전처는 설명하고 있습니다.
