Desertification of Jeju seabed covers area of 5,000 soccer fields
Lawmaker warns of drastically falling fisheries revenue


Imagine 5,000 soccer fields...that’s about the area of the local seabed that is showing signs of a phenomenon called “desertification,” in which sea creatures begin to die out due to poor water quality and other conditions.

Experts surveyed 9,420 hectares of seabed located at a depth of 15 meters and discovered that 37 percent of the area studied was showing signs of desertification. That’s according to lawmaker Wi Seong-gon, quoting data from the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency.

Wi warned that if the situation were allowed to worsen, it would lead to a 40 percent drop in fisheries profit per hectare. He therefore stressed the need for urgent countermeasures.

축구장 약 5천개 면적에 달하는 제주 바다에서 갯녹음 현상, 즉 바다 사막화가 진행되는 것으로 나타났습니다.

위성곤 의원이 한국수산자원관리공단으로부터 제출받은 자료에 따르면 제주 바다 수심 15미터에서
갯녹음을 조사한 9천 420 헥타아르 가운데 37%인 3천 495헥타르에서 바다 사막화가 발생했습니다.

이같은 면적은 축구장 넓이의 4천 900여 개에 달하는 것입니다.

위성곤 의원은 바다 사막화가 발생하면 헥타르당 어업소득이 40% 감소하는 것으로 추정된다며
대책 마련이 시급하다고 강조했습니다.
