Jeju seeking to add to list of World Natural Heritage
Three island sites already have UNESCO designation

Local officials will decide by the end of this month which local sites to seek to add to the island’s list of UNESCO World Natural Heritage.

The results of a feasibility study will be announced October 19th at the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center. Officials will then finalize the candidate list and submit that to the Cultural Heritage Administration.

Potential sites include the caves of Geomun Oreum in Gujwa-eup,
Suwolbong and Chagwido in Hangyeong-myeon,
Socheon Cave in Hallim-eup, and the Yongmeori Coast in Andeok-myeon.

The decision will be based on the site’s natural scenery, its uniqueness, and other traits.

Jeju will submit the shortlist to the Cultural Heritage Administration by the end of this year, with the hopes of eventually obtaining UNESCO designation for the sites.

수월봉 · 용머리해안 세계자연유산 추가 등재 추진

유네스코 세계자연유산 추가 등재 후보지가 이번달에 최종 결정될 전망입니다.

제주특별자치도는 오는 19일 세계자연유산센터에서 열리는 세계자연유산지구 확대 타당성 조사용역 최종 보고회에서 문화재청에 신청할 후보지역을 선정할 계획입니다.

현재 후보지역은 구좌읍 거문오름 상류동굴군과 한경면의 수월봉과 차귀도, 한림읍 소천굴, 안덕면 용머리해안 등 5군데로 경관과 희소성 등을 고려해 최종 결정할 예정입니다.

제주도는 이달 안에 후보지역이 결정되면 올 연말쯤 문화재청에 유네스코 추가 등재 후보지로 신청할 계획입니다.
