Typhoon Chaba leaves 2,000 tons of waste on coastline
Wood and other debris damage fish farms


Hundreds of people are cleaning up the estimated 2,000 tons of waste that Typhoon Chaba left on Jeju shores.

The waste has damaged local fish farms and blighted the island’s landscape.

About 120 members of the 9th brigade of the Marine Corps helped Friday clean up the Yongdam Coast Road in Jeju City. They picked up wood and other debris that the storm had blown up onto the shore.

Another 60 or so members of the Jeju branch of the Korea Airports Corporation cleaned up Leports Park in Yongdam.

About 1,400 of the 2,000 tons of waste that was washed ashore has so far been collected and disposed of.

해양쓰레기 2천 톤…각 기관 정화활동 잇따라

태풍 차바로 밀려든 해양 쓰레기로 경관 훼손과 마을어장 파괴 등 2차 피해가 우려되는 가운데 각 기관들이 정화활동에 발벗고 나섰습니다.

해병대 제9여단은 오늘 제주시 용담 해안도로 일대에서 해병대원 120여 명을 대거 투입해 해안가에 쌓인 폐목재와 각종 폐기물을 치웠습니다.

한국공항공사도 제주지역본부도 모두 60여 명이 참여한 가운데 용담 레포츠 공원 주변 해안가에 쌓여 있던
해양 쓰레기를 수거했습니다.

도내에는 태풍 차바로 2천 톤의 해양쓰레기가 쌓인 것으로 추정되고 있는데 지금까지 1천4백톤이 수거됐습니다.
