Typhoon leaves 2,300 tons of waste on Jeju shores
80% cleaned up so far


Typhoon Chaba ravaged the island October fifth, but the cleanup continues.

The provincial government’s most recent estimate for the amount of waste the storm left strewn along the island’s coastline is 2,300 tons.

Over 20,000 people have so far helped clean it up. That includes public officials, military personnel, and members of some 50 small and large organizations. They have managed to clean up about 80 percent of the waste.

Provincial officials aim to have the task complete by October 22nd.

태풍 차바로 인한 해양쓰레기가 2천톤을 넘고 있습니다.

제주특별자치도에 따르면 지난 5일 발생한 태풍 차바 이후 하천에서 떠내려온 나뭇가지와 토사 등
해양쓰레기는 2천 3백톤을 넘고 있는 것으로 추산되고 있습니다.

이에 따라 읍면동 공무원과 자생단체회원, 군장병 등 50여개 단체에서 2만 여 명을 투입해 쓰레기 수거작업에 나서 현재 80%의 처리량을 보이고 있습니다.

제주도는 오는 22일까지 해양쓰레기를 모두 수거한다는 계획입니다.
